报告题目:Environmental Remediation using Polymers

报告内容:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemical compounds widely used over the past 50 years in many commercial and industrial settings. PFAS are highly stable and can accumulate and persist in the environment for decades. Much recent attention has been given to the potential harmful effects to humans arising from prolonged exposure to PFAS, and compelling evidence has been presented relating PFAS exposure with several diseases. Thus, effective removal of PFAS from the environment has become a major focus of a number research groups. However, all approaches investigated to date have limited efficacy for sorption of PFAS. In this seminar I will describe the synthesis using RAFT polymerization of partly-fluorinated and cationic polymers for removal of a range of PFAS molecules. The majority of PFAS carry negative charges in normal environmental conditions, and hence it is proposed that combining fluorinated PFPE segments and cationic quaternized DMAEA will enhance uptake of PFAS by the block polymer. The seminar will describe studies examining the effect of polymer structure on PFAS sorption by two generations of the block copolymer, and the relative importance of the fluorinated and charged species. I will also described several methods of incorporating the fluorinated block copolymers into devices for practical application in cleaning polluted water streams. Finally I will illustrate how our polymers can potentially be used to treat patients with high levels of blood PFAS levels.

报告人简介:Andrew Whittaker is a professor of physical chemistry with broad experience in polymer synthesis, characterization and the physical chemistry of polymers. He is currently President of the Pacific Polymer Federation and is past Chair of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Polymer Division. He has received numerous awards including in 2014 the Paul J. Flory International Polymer Research Prize and in 2015 the Chinese Academy of Sciences Presidents International Fellowship. He has published over 370 scientific papers with >11,600 citations, has an h-index of 54 and i-10 index of 257.
